Williamson County’s pair of defending high school volleyball champions both earned state tournament berths Thursday. The Brentwood girls, the seven-time defending Class AAA champions, swept Lebanon in straight sets in the sectional round, while Nolensville, last year’s Class AA champs, claimed a 3-0 win over Creekwood. The state tournament for all classifications begins next week.
Brentwood Defeats Lebanon, 3-0, Class AAA Sectional
The Lady Bruins posted a 25-15, 25-21, 25-18 victory Thursday night at home led by senior hitters Mary Oldham and Shaye Eggleston. Oldham collected 13 kills on .400 hitting to go with seven digs, while Eggleston tallied 12 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Fellow senior Reese Bailey added nine kills and a pair of blocks and Zoe Oldham – Mary’s younger sister – recorded seven kills and seven digs. Haley Sanders led the defense with 17 digs, while Meredith Moody scooped up 16 more for the Lady Bruins. Dylan Sulcer guided the offense with 33 assists. Brentwood was coming off a seventh consecutive Region 6-AAA championship on Tuesday. The Lady Bruins defeated Hillsboro and Summit in the regional to earn another home match.
Summit Falls to Station Camp, 3-2, Class AAA Sectional
Summit battled, but fell short in a marathon five-set match at Station Camp on Thursday to miss the school's first state appearance. Station Camp advanced to the big stage with a 20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 15-12 victory over Summit, which reached the region tournament for the first time in school history earlier this week. Science Hill, Maryville, Cookeville, Collierville, Houston and Class AAA tournament host Siegel will join the Lady Bruins and Station Camp at state.
Nolensville Defeats Creekwood, 3-0, Class AA Sectional
Maggie Rickert rained down 18 kills and the Lady Knights advanced to the Class AA state tournament with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 win Thursday at home. Caymin Ladd (9 kills), Jazmyn Jenkins (8 kills), Avery Young (7 kills) and Charley Fulton (7 kills) all added the offense for Nolensville. Caroline Johnston dished out 26 assists and Avery Patton added 13 more. Defensively, Lauren Starke, the District 9-AA MVP, tallied 20 digs, while Fulton added 17 with Young adding a dozen and Maymie Guthrie collecting eight more. Nolensville will be joined on the state stage by Greeneville, Anderson County, East Hamilton, Signal Mountain, Murfreesboro Central and Crockett County. The Class AA tournament will be hosted by Blackman High School in Murfreesboro and is set to begin Tuesday.
