Playing with the #StrongforBarb mentality, the Brentwood High School volleyball team cruised to the District 12-AAA tournament title Wednesday night – the eighth consecutive tournament championship for the seven-time defending Class AAA champions. The Lady Bruins clinched the title with a 25-15, 25-17, 25-10 win over Summit, defeating the Lady Spartans for a third time this season and second time without veteran coach Barbara Campbell. Campbell is recovering from an undisclosed health issue and has missed Brentwood last four matches, including the Lady Bruins 3-0 sweep of Summit on Sept. 29. Campbell’s family says the Brentwood coach, who is in her 33rd season, is getting better each day. Longtime assistants Angie Noble and Cathy Cram have been leading the Lady Bruins in coach Campbell’s absence and will now prepare the Lady Bruins for the Region 6-AAA tournament to be hosted by Brentwood Tuesday. Senior Shaye Eggleston collected an 18-kill, 12-dig double-double to lead the Lady Bruins Wednesday in the tournament championship. Brentwood faced a Summit team who reached the final for the first time and will join the Lady Bruins in the regional next week for the first time as well. Mary Oldham added eight kills and three aces for Brentwood and sister Zoe Oldham tacked on six kills. Setter Dylan Sulcer recorded another double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs, while Haley Sanders also scooped up 11 digs. Summit, which finished the regular season No. 2 in the district standings, reached Wednesday’s final after Ravenwood was forced to bow out of the tournament because of too few players. The Lady Raptors had played Brentwood in both the district and region final in each of the last four seasons. Franklin, in 2015, is the only other team in the last eight seasons to join Brentwood in the regional. Statistics for the Lady Spartans weren’t provided from Wednesday's match. Summit will take on District 11-AAA winner Dickson County, while Brentwood battles Hillsboro in region semifinals Tuesday. The winners will play for the region title scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start. The top two teams advance to the sectional round where a win earns a state berth.
